Access & Entreprenuership

By Brad

Today, IIA Broadband Ambassador Navarrow Wright has a great piece on The Huffington Post highlighting the need to ensure there is an “even playing field” when it comes to communities connecting to the digital economy. Here’s a taste:

The importance of wireless technologies became a national priority earlier this year when President Obama talked about the need to deploy next-generation 4G wireless networks to 98% of the nation during his 2011 State of the Union Address. Likewise, the Federal Communication Commission has become acutely attuned to the need for additional greater spectrum in order to sustain wireless growth and demand..

Because of the increasing importance of wireless accessibility and the need to improve the more efficient allocation and use of spectrum, the proposed merger of AT&T and T-Mobile represents a very important measure for the future of wireless-enabled entrepreneurship, especially for people of color. Regardless of the companies involved in this deal, the end result holds a greater promise for consumers and businesses alike, particularly for those individuals who stand to lose access to a 4G LTE network if this doesn’t come to fruition.

No Time For Delays

By Brad

At The Huffington Post, the prolific Navarrow Wright, CTO of InteractiveOne (and an IIA Broadband Ambassador), has penned an op-ed on the importance of not letting government policy slow efforts to close America’s digital divide. After describing how access to technology radically changed his life for the better, Wright turns his attention to the benefits of the proposed merger of AT&T and T-Mobile:

The benefits of this merger, both to underserved communities and to budding digital entrepreneurs, are innumerable. Not only will the increased coverage allow others to become involved in applications development who may otherwise have lacked sufficient coverage to do so, it will also supply services to network operators and assist in network management.

It is my hope that the power of the merged companies, with extended reach and larger area of deployment, will encourage further innovation and inspire entrepreneurship among those within underserved communities.

Hurting Those You Are Claiming to Help

By Brad

In an op-ed for the Huffington Post, IIA Broadband Ambassador Navarrow Wright of Maximum Leverage Solutions — a strong supporter to closing America’s digital divide — takes aim at both net neutrality advocates and the FCC:

What is truly spiteful is when you hear the FCC say “We need to partner with the corporate world to deliver on the National Broadband Plan in order to get high speed Internet access to everyone.” And then you purposely conduct activities to take attention away from working towards that goal. Who are you hurting? The Government? The Telcos? No! You are hurting the very people who you say you’re trying to “save” the Internet for, misleading them to believe that your plan will work out better in the end.

What If Indeed

By Brad

Writing on his blog, Navarrow Wright of Maximum Leverage Solutions (and an IIA Broadband Ambassador) pinpoints an unfortunate reality of the endless net neutrality debate:

What if every ounce of energy, every creative brainstorm session, every dollar, every speech, every rally, every minute that has been devoted to the pseudo issue of Net Neutrality could instead have been aimed at the all-too real problem of broadband access in America’s inner cities, small towns, and low-income neighborhoods? What if?

Four Encouraging Things About the National Broadband Plan

By Brad

At the Huffington Post, IIA Broadband Ambassador Navarrow Wright digs into the FCC’s National Broadband Plan and highlights four points he finds encouraging:

[T]his plan has a real-world focus. Probably the best parts of the report deal with the specific ways broadband will improve our lives. The plan has clear, almost futuristic detail on what broadband means for us. Start with jobs and economic growth - probably the single most important issue in the country now. Today’s entrepreneurs can’t grow an effective business and generate jobs without high-speed Internet access, which offers low barriers to entry. But the plan also covers online education to help the unemployed or underemployed, improved energy efficiency and better healthcare at less cost.

On that last point, a nursing home can cost $200 a day. But a wireless health monitoring system for someone living independently costs half that much per month. Do the math.
