Transforming Africa

From a CNN interview with Ajai Chowdhry, CEP of global IT services provider HCL Infosystems:

African countries should invest in broadband infrastructure to improve the welfare of their people, according to Ajai Chowdhry…

The Indian entrepreneur, who is often described as India’s equivalent to Bill Gates, said access to information will be critical in solving many of the continent’s problems.

“I’ve a very strong belief that Africa should take a leadership position in putting up broadband right down to every village and you’ll see the change,” he said. “If you give people information you can actually transform Africa.”

The Deepest Digital Divide

As America works towards bringing high-speed Internet access to every doorstep, a new report from TeleGeography (via Ars Technica) finds the digital divide is far deeper around the world. Looking at Internet penetration in 127 countries, the study finds only 10 countries have broadband penetration over 80%, while 64 countries are well under 20%.

Then there’s this sobering fact:

“Broadband represents the most extreme example in the gulf between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’,” said TeleGeography Executive Director John Dinsdale. “Less than 2 percent of African households have broadband compared with 68 percent of North American homes.”
